SAND MANDALA

From Wednesday 8th to Saturday 11th July, eight Tibetan monks from Tashi Lhunpo Monastery will construct a Sand Mandala of Amitayus – the Buddha of Long Life.

Come and see how the intricate design is painstakingly made using countless millions of grains of coloured ‘sand’, to represent the celestial abode of the Buddha and his entourage.  Viewed simply as a work of art, it is magnificent.  For those who wish to enter more deeply into the meaning, it represents a blessing as powerful as the number of grains of sand used in its construction.  At the end of the exhibition, in a moving ceremony, the main Teacher will release the deities and destroy the mandala by sweeping up the sand and distributing it into running water so that its blessing may spread as far as possible for the benefit of all sentient beings.
